Irish Board for Training in Cardiovascular Medicine

The Irish Board for Training in Cardiovascular Medicine is a member of the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training (ICHMT) and engages in this capacity with the RCPI to oversee the delivery of a National Higher Specialty Training Programme.

Its primary purpose is to establish, develop and maintain high training standards and best practice, and to support Specialist Registrars (SpR’s) during their time on the cardiology training programme. The training board also participates in interview and selection, manpower and profession planning processes through its interactions with the ICHMT and the Medical Training and Education Unit within the Health Service Executive thus contributing to the future development cardiology in Ireland.

The work of the training board is undertaken by two National Specialty Directors (NSD’s) with responsibility for overseeing the training programme in Ireland, comprising 9 training sites, 9 training directors and a faculty of over 40 trainers across the country. The NSD’s with the support of the Executive Director interact with, trainees, training faculty, regulatory bodies and other key stakeholders on an ongoing basis.

The National Specialty Directors for Cardiology are Prof. Brian MacNeill and Dr. Ross Murphy.
