This policy explains our data processing practices in line with GDPR compliance and explains the rights of the web user regarding the ways in which their personal data is used.
Who we are
Established in 1949 the Irish Cardiac Society is the professional society in Ireland for those whose primary interest is in the practice of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiovascular Research.

A 32 county body, the society has grown and developed over 7 decades, keeping apace with the tremendous advancements which have taken place within the profession of cardiology. The objectives of the society set out in 1949 remain as relevant today as they were upon their introduction 70 years ago.
In 2023 the Irish Cardiac Society became a registered charity and company limited by guarantee. CHY: 23065 CRO: 708262 CRA: 20206568. The founding directors of Irish Cardiac Society CLG are: Prof. James Crowley, Prof. Vincent Maher and Prof. Carl Vaughan.
All member data was transferred from Irish Cardiac Society to Irish Cardiac Society CLG as part of an asset transfer agreement, approved by a member vote at an EGM held on Saturday April 10th 2024.
Scope
Under REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation) you have the right to:
- information about the processing of your personal data;
- obtain access to the personal data held about you;
- ask for incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete personal data to be corrected;
- request that personal data be erased when it’s no longer needed or if processing it is unlawful;
- object to the processing of your personal data for marketing purposes or on grounds relating to your particular situation;
- request the restriction of the processing of your personal data in specific cases;
- receive your personal data in a machine-readable format and send it to another controller (‘data portability’);
- request that decisions based on automated processing concerning you or significantly affecting you and based on your personal data are made by natural persons, not only by computers. You also have the right in this case to express your point of view and to contest the decision.

There is no fee for this service and in line with the GDPR we will respond to you within one calendar month of receipt of the request. You will be asked to verify your identity by reasonable and proportionate means. If this is your first request, no fee is required. You have the right to object to the processing of your data and the Irish Cardiac Society will respect that right but may need to continue to process your data where processing is necessary for the performance of a contract or for compliance with a legal obligation to which the ICS, as data controller, is subject.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Contact forms
Unless you have voluntarily given your consent for any other reason, we do not use your name or email address for anything other than replying to your message.
Irish Cardiac Society Membership Details
By registering on this website as a member of the Irish Cardiac Society, we ask you for some personal details. This information is needed to process your membership registration and the information you give is only ever used for the explicit purpose of processing your membership.
During your registration, we ask for your consent to display your membership details on our Members Directory. The information you provide, including your email address, is displayed at https://irishcardiacsociety.ie/members-directory/, a restricted page that is only available for other members of the Irish Cardiac Society to view.
By registering for membership on this website, you are consenting to allow the Irish Cardiac Society to contact you from time to time with updates, news, event listings and other news that is relevant to your membership with the society. We will never use your contact information for any purpose outside of updating you with relevant news about the society and if we need to contact you in regards to your membership.
You can choose to remove your details from our Members Directory at any time, by visiting your account (once logged in) and changing your consent to “No” in your Profile Details.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Who we share your data with
Our Team
Members of our team have access to the information that you provide us with. For example, Administrators can access customer information, like your name, address, email address and telephone number. Our team members have access to this information to help support you.
Our Payment Providers
To process the payment of your online order from our shop, or the payment of your Irish Cardiac Society Membership, we need to securely share certain details with our payment provider, Stripe. The details that Stripe needs to process your order correctly include your name, address, your email address, your payment method information (such as credit or debit card information) and your device IP address. All of this information is provided solely for the purposes of processing your transaction and to authenticate your payment.
MailChimp
We use MailChimp to keep you updated with the latest news from Irish Cardiac Society from time-to-time. By registering for membership on this website, you are consenting to allow us to securely store your email address in our MailChimp account, for the sole purpose of contacting you in relation to your membership with the Irish Cardiac Society. You can unsubscribe from this list at any point by contacting us.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. If you have registered your membership on this website, we will store your details securely on a database and we will also store your email address with the providers of our email newsletter, MailChimp, as described above. In order to process your online order or Irish Cardiac Society membership payment, we need to share your details with our payment providers, Stripe, as described above.
How we protect your data
